Kyle Larson’s No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing team was penalized a second straight week by NASCAR on Wednesday, this time for a violation found following Sunday’s race at Michigan International Speedway.
NASCAR penalizes Kyle Larson’s team for 2nd race in a row
Larson’s car failed inspection after Sunday’s race at Michigan.

As Larson’s car went through initial post-race inspection following a third-place finish, officials determined the No. 42 Chevrolet did not pass the laser inspection station that takes various measurements. NASCAR then brought the car back to its research and development center in Concord, N.C., for further examination.
Larson lost 15 driver points and the team 15 owner points, while interim crew chief Phil Surgen was fined $25,000. Surgen, the team’ engineer, was filling in for Larson’s regular crew chief, Chad Johnston, who was serving a one-race suspension for a lug nut violation incurred the week before at Pocono Raceway.
The points deduction carries special significance for the winless Larson, who drops from 18th to 21st in the Sprint Cup standings, 38 points behind the last transfer spot to qualify for NASCAR’s playoff. Larson will either need to overcome the points gap or win one of the 11 remaining regular season races.
