While many chuckled at the lack of their fighting prowess, NASCAR didn’t take kindly to John Wes Townley and Spencer Gallagher engaging in fisticuffs during Saturday night’s Camping World Truck Series race, with the sanctioning body fining both drivers on Wednesday.
NASCAR drivers John Wes Townley, Spencer Gallagher fined for fighting during Truck Series race
Townley was docked $15,000, while Gallagher lost $12,000 for their involvement in an amusing altercation that occurred Saturday night.

Townley was fined $15,000 and Gallagher $12,500 for their fight on the track at Gateway Motorsports Park, a scuffle that elicited much national attention and even had NASCAR CEO and Chairman Brian France quipping during an interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that neither has a future as a UFC champion.

The incident began following the second accident involving the two when Townley got out of his truck and approached Gallagher. This led to them wrestling one another on the ground and Townley eventually landing several punches to Gallagher’s face. As this all unfolded, track workers did not intervene and the “fight” went on for an extended period of time, compared to most on-track confrontations that are quickly broken up.
Gallagher issued an apology on Monday, saying he was “ashamed” for his involvement and putting NASCAR in a “negative light.”
Both drivers were scheduled to compete in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race Friday at Daytona International Speedway, but Townley’s team withdrew its entry Wednesday morning.
