22 cars involved in massive wreck at Daytona NASCAR race

Jamie McMurray’s spin triggered the “Big One” Saturday night at Daytona.

A multi-car wreck sidelined several prominent names in Saturday night’s NASCAR race at Daytona International Speedway.

The crash occurred on Lap 91, involving a total of 22 cars. It began when Jimmie Johnson bumped Jamie McMurray, causing McMurray to slide down the track into Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Kyle Larson. McMurray believed the contact with Larson cut down his left rear tire, causing him to spin into a large pack of cars.

With the track blocked, a pileup ensued and collected Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Danica Patrick, Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson, among others. Earnhardt was the defending race winner, while Harvick, Johnson and Kenseth were expected contenders.

“Just a bunch of cars crashing -- pretty much that was it,” Kenseth said. “I probably should have just hung in the back; hindsight, but who knows when they’re going to wreck, you never know if they’re going to wreck. Just trying to get back towards the front and there was a wreck somewhere a few rows up in front of me and just nowhere really to go.”
