NASCASR fined Xfinity Series driver Darrell Wallace Jr. $15,000 for a tweet that likened NASCAR officials to Muppets following Friday’s Xfinity race at Daytona International Speedway.

Wallace, who drives for Roush Fenway Racing, was penalized a spot late in the race for not maintaining reasonable speed while under caution, as he slowed trying to save fuel. When the Subway Firecracker 250 concluded, the 22-year-old sent out the offending tweet.
NASCAR has typically frowned upon drivers publicly questioning the integrity and capabilities of its officials. Tony Stewart was fined $35,000 in April when he said NASCAR was putting drivers at risk by not mandating teams apply and tighten the maximum five lug nuts to a wheel each time a car leaves pit road. Just days after issuing the fine, NASCAR modified its policy requiring teams to fasten every lug, but Stewart’s fine remained in place.
Wallace’s penalty falls under Section 12.8.a of the NASCAR rule book, which states an Xfinity Series driver can be fined between $5,000 and $25,000 for comments or actions that disparage the sport or NASCAR’s leadership.
Roush Fenway Racing will not appeal the penalty.
