Kevin Harvick wins the 2016 New England 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

Kevin Harvick passed Matt Kenseth for the lead with six laps remaining to win Sunday’s Bad Boy Off Road 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, assuring himself a spot in the next round of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs.

Kenseth and Toyota teammate Martin Truex Jr. were dominant throughout the afternoon, combining to lead 246 of 300 laps. But after qualifying 19th, Harvick gradually worked his way to the front. When a caution for a crash involving Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Reed Sorenson set up a restart with six laps to go, Harvick took advantage. He kept even with Kenseth entering Turn 1, then completed the winning pass into Turn 3. It was Harvick’s third win of the season.

Kenseth finished second, Kyle Busch third, Brad Keselowski fourth, and Kurt Busch fifth. Truex, who led a race-high 141 laps and won the playoff opener last week, slid to seventh.

Harvick joins Truex in solidifying his spot in the Chase quarterfinal round. The remaining 12 positions will be determined following next weekend’s race at Dover International Speedway when four of the 16-driver field are eliminated.
