An apparent cut tire caused Kyle Busch to spin, triggering a 10-car accident that collected several contenders during Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

Busch was running in a pack of cars on Lap 71 when suddenly he spun, leaving those directly behind him with little room to avoid the No. 18 Toyota that was sideways on the track. Among those who sustained damage were Jamie McMurray, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson, Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson, and Martin Truex Jr.

Larson and Truex are first and second in the Monster Energy Cup Series regular points standings, while Kyle Larson sits fourth overall. Kurt Busch won the season-opening Daytona 500 in February, with Logano winning the 2015 Daytona 500.

Truex, Logano and Austin Dillon retired with unrepairable damage. All three were evaluated and released from the infield medical center. The rest of those involved continued on.

Logano said a few laps before Kyle Busch spun, he saw Busch and Michael McDowell make contact, which may have caused Busch’s left-rear to puncture.

“(McDowell) got into the side of (Busch). I didn’t see any smoke off (Busch’s car), just a near miss,” Logano said. “Then four or five laps later I think, the left-rear popped on and around (Busch) started going and we were there.

“Wrong place at the wrong time again for us. It’s superspeedway racing. Sometimes you’re on the good side of it, sometimes you’re on the wrong side of it. That was the bad one. We’ll just move and head to the next race.”
