What you need to know to on how to watch Daytona 500 qualifying Sunday at Daytona International Speedway.

How drivers qualify Sunday third on back will set the starting order for a pair of heat qualifiers on Thursday. The results of those races determine the bulk of the lineup for the Feb. 18 Daytona 500. All 40 drivers entered are assured a spot in the Daytona 500 regardless of their qualifying speed or finish in Thursday’s qualifying races.
Chase Elliott won the pole each of the past two years, while his crew chief, Alan Gustafson, has won the pole for the past three years. The Gustafson-prepared No. 24 Chevrolet with driver Jeff Gordon set fast time in 2015, the final full season of Gordon’s career who was then replaced by Elliott.
A third straight pole would make Elliott the first driver since Ken Schrader (1988-1990) to accomplish the feat. Elliott’s father, NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, also won three Daytona 500 poles from 1985-1987.
Defending race winner Kurt Busch is seeking to become just the fourth driver to win the Daytona 500 in consecutive years. He would join Richard Petty (1973-74), Cale Yarborough (1983-84), and Sterling Marlin (1994-95).
