Landon Cassill is in and Jeffrey Earnhardt is out at StarCom Racing, which Monday named Cassill to drive its No. 00 Chevrolet in upcoming Cup Series races at Martinsville Speedway (Sunday) and Texas Motor Speedway (April 8).

Earnhardt, the grandson of Dale Earnhardt and nephew of Dale Earnhardt Jr., began the 2018 season by finishing 21st in the Daytona 500 but followed by finishing no better than 31st in the next four races. The 28-year-old is ranked 33rd in the points standings — the lowest of any driver who has started all five races.

StarCom was formed last fall and in its first full season competing in the Cup Series. The team is hoping Cassill — a veteran with 259 career starts in NASCAR’s top division and a best finish of fourth at Talladega Superspeedway in 2014 — will help the team through its growing pains. Because StarCom owns a charter (equivalent to a franchise in other sports) it is assured a starting spot in every race.

“I love working with new teams,” Cassill said. “I feel like that is one of my strengths. StarCom Racing looks like they are in it for the long haul, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.”

Said Derrike Cope, StarCom team manager: “I’m optimistic that his knowledge and experience will only help our efforts as well as the growth of our team.”
