Deron Williams Will Have Wrist Surgery After Dealing With Injury All Season

Deron Williams will have season-ending surgery on his wrist, the New Jersey Nets announced Friday. Williams has battle a sprained wrist all season; the Nets said in their statement that the surgery will clean up bone fragments and scar tissue.

Williams played just 12 games with the Nets due to the nagging injury and New Jersey's deep deficit in the standings. When the team acquired Williams in February, it needed to essentially play perfect ball to get back in the playoff race. The team is devastating shallow at small forward and behind Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries up front, though, and the Nets couldn't get enough momentum to challenge for the No. 8 seed.

That said, Williams played well despite shooting an awful 35 percent from the floor in those dozen games. He averaged 12.8 assists, and the Nets went 4-8. Unfortunately, New Jersey gave up all of its draft picks and trade assets to get Williams; to build around him and Lopez, the team will need to rely on trades and free agency. Humphries is on track to become a free agent this offseason.
