Jerry West will join the Golden State Warriors' front office, reports Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News. West will not be in a decision-making role -- the team recently extended the contract of general manager Larry Riley and added former agent Bob Myers as an assistant -- but will provide a voice on personnel matters and, according to Kawakami, report to new franchise owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber.
Jerry West Set To Join Warriors’ Front Office, According To Report
West is a legend both in the game and as an executive; he built the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant-Shaquille O'Neal dynasty and served as the Memphis Grizzlies' GM the last time that team was good. To land West in any role is a coup for Golden State, looking to bounce pack from a couple of rough years, and in a larger sense a couple of tough decades.
The Warriors are without a coach, and Kawakami indicates West will play a role in helping the team grade candidates, among which Dwane Casey and Mike Brown are considered early contenders. The Warriors are also seen as likely to be active on the trade market, with an unsettled backcourt (Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis) and holes at small forward and perhaps center.
