Rick Adelman Interested In Open Blazers GM Job

Rick Adelman, passed over for the Los Angeles Lakers head coach position in favor of Mike Brown, is looking a bit higher up the totem pole (and Pacific coast), having expressed to Kerry Eggers of the Portland Tribune that he's interesting in talking to the Portland Trail Blazers about the team's newly open general manager position.

The Blazers fired Rich Cho as general manager last week, citing that he was a bad fit with upper management; Cho had been on the job only 10 months, having replaced Kevin Pritchard well into free agency in July 2010. Cho was at the helm of a team that swung a great midseason trade for Gerald Wallace, but reportedly clashed behind the scenes with Paul Allen's deputies.

Adelman has never worked in a front office, having served as a head coach for the Blazers (where he led the team to its two most recent NBA Finals trips in 1990 and 1992), Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and, most recently, the Houston Rockets. His contract with Houston expired at the end of the Rockets' 43-39 season; the team elected not to bring him back, and to hire Kevin McHale to replace him.

Adelman told Eggers he’d like to talk to the Blazers about the GM position.

"I'd love to talk to them," says Adelman. "I'd be interested in talking to them about any position."

Adelman pauses, then amends his comments.

"I have no interest in the head coaching job," he says. "I need to make that clear. They have a really good coach (Nate McMillan). Nate has done a great job."
