Lawrence Frank Hired As Detroit Pistons Head Coach, According To Report

The Detroit Pistons have officially hired former Celtics assistant coach Lawrence Frank as the team's new head coach, according reports released late Thursday night. Frank will replace John Kuester, who compiled a 57-107 record in two seasons with the team.

Previously, Frank worked as head coach of the New Jersey Nets, amassing a 225-241 record while leading the team to four consecutive playoff berths to begin his tenure. Following a 0-16 start to the 2009-2010 season, the 40-year old was mercifully fired by the team, eventually signing on as a defensive assistant to Doc Rivers and the Boston Celtics. Despite the team's aging squad, the Celtic's defense managed to finish first in the league in opponent points allowed in their only season under Frank.

Coincidentally, the Pistons’ new coach is the second assistant from Rivers’ staff to leave the team within the past few days. Darren Erman left to be an assistant with Golden State on Wednesday.

Frank's departure also marks the second time in two year's that Rivers has lost his top defensive assistant. Last season Tom Thibodeau left the Celtics' staff to become head coach of the Chicago Bulls, eventually winning Coach of the Year honors after leading the team to the number one seed in the Eastern Conference.
