Steve Nash was not traded from the Phoenix Suns at the 2012 NBA trade deadline, as the Suns held firm to their stance that he was untouchable. However, Nash did fire a bit of a warning shot the Suns' way as he prepares to become an unrestricted free agent over the summer.
Steve Nash Says He Won’t Re-Sign With Suns If Organization Doesn’t Improve Roster
In an interview with the Dan Patrick Show, Nash admitted that he would leave Phoenix if the organization didn’t demonstrate interest in upgrading the roster. As transcribed by Eye on Basketball:
“I definitely do want to win,” he said. “I’m not going to come back to the Suns if there isn’t an improvement. If they’re not ambitious and they’re not looking to upgrade the roster seriously. And I think they are. They’ll have a lot of flexibility in free agency. I think I’ve been standing pat so they could do some things this summer. I think they’ll become a definite possibility for me, but I do want to win and I do want to consider all my options.”
The Suns have just over $30 million in committed salary this summer, not including a $4 million qualifying offer for Robin Lopez. They could clear another $6.5 million by using the amnesty clause on disappointing forward Josh Childress.
