Kendall Marshall to be waived by Washington Wizards
Point guard Kendall Marshall will reportedly be waived by the Washington Wizards after being traded from the Phoenix Suns.
The point guard was traded from the Phoenix Suns to Washington as part of the Marcin Gortat/Emeka Okafor swap on Friday. Now it appears his next destination is unknown. Marshall, the No. 13 pick in the 2012 draft, struggled as a rookie in Phoenix after an excellent college career at North Carolina. He averaged 3.0 points and 3.0 assists in 14 minutes per game last year, shooting 37.1 percent from the field and only becoming a part of the rotation in February.
It should be noted though that Marshall entered the league in just about the worst possible situation. While on draft night it looked like he’d get to be Steve Nash’s apprentice on a team with playoff aspirations, he instead found himself buried on the worst team in the Western Conference. Marshall’s best skill is managing a team and, with the Suns, he didn’t exactly have a lot of good scoring options alongside him. Still, Marshall averaged 12 assists per game in three appearances as a starter.
Marshall received DNP-CD's in Phoenix's last two preseason outings. It shouldn't surprise that the new Suns regime opted to go in a different direction after acquiring Eric Bledsoe over the summer, but it is somewhat of a shock that he is without an NBA home entering the second year of his rookie deal. Marshall is a casualty of the Wizards already having 15 players under contract at the time of the trade. Incoming guards Malcolm Lee and Shannon Brown are expected to be released, too. At just 22 years old, Marshall should get a look from a team that needs point guard help.
