NBA trade rumors: Kyle Lowry could be next Raptor moved

After moving Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings, the Toronto Raptors will next look to trade point guard Kyle Lowry.

The next domino to fall for the Toronto Raptors after the trade of Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings likely involves moving veteran point guard Kyle Lowry, ESPN's Marc Stein reports.

When the Raptors traded Gay and his massive contract on Sunday, it was clear that first-year general manager Masai Ujiri was ready to shake things up. Stein reports that would align with the ultimate goal of clearing cap space, acquiring assets and perhaps hoping to join the tanking race for Canadian and potential No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins. While Ujiri already had made anyone on the roster available aside from young center Jonas Valanciunas, the writing was on the wall that Lowry would be the next to pack his bags.

One of the most intriguing pieces Toronto received in the Gay deal was young point guard Greivis Vasquez, and how effective he could be splitting time at point guard with Lowry was seemingly a problem.

Lowry is also the largest of the Raptors’ expiring contracts this season, and he’s due to make $6.2 million before becoming an unrestricted free agent in the summer. With Toronto in a rebuild, the opportunity is there for the team to get something in return for the 27-year-old.

Lowry has averaged 14.8 points and 6.7 assists this season and would be a solid addition to a team looking for more backcourt depth. He’s an attractive rental without the long-term cap space issues.
