The Memphis Grizzlies wasted no time to reach out to recently-fired head coach George Karl after the Denver Nuggets parted ways with him Thursday. The fact the Grizzlies spoke with Karl "almost immediately" after he was fired, according to Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports, might lend a few hints toward the Grizzlies situation with coach Lionel Hollins.

Memphis’ coaching situation remains a work in progress, as it has not reached an agreement to extend Hollins’ contract, which expires on June 30. Talks between the sides have been at a standstill, and the Grizzlies have granted Hollins permission to speak with other teams.

Karl was named the 2013 NBA Coach of the Year and has compiled 1,887 career wins with a .599 winning percentage in his coaching career, which dates back to 1984. His firing came as a surprise after he led Denver to a franchise-best 57 wins through the season.

More on the Grizzlies: The case against Hollins

The Clippers and Brooklyn Nets have emerged as potential destinations for Hollins, as well as the Nuggets in what could turn out to be a head coach swap between Memphis and Denver. Hollins has stated that his preference is to stay with the Grizzlies.

Amick also indicates that sources familiar with talks surrounding Karl expect the Clippers to contact him soon regarding their own coaching vacancy, but they have not reached out yet.
