San Antonio Spurs restricted free agent center Tiago Splitter will likely receive an offer sheet worth $8.5 million to 9 million per year, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. That amount is similar to what Houston Rockets center Omer Asik received last year as a restricted free agent.
NBA free agency rumors: Tiago Splitter to reportedly receive lucrative offer sheet
Spurs restricted free agent Tiago Splitter is expected to receive an offer sheet similar in total value to the one Omer Asik got from the Rockets last offseason.
The Portland Trail Blazers are expected to be a main suitor, as they're still armed with nearly $9 million in cap space even after acquiring Thomas Robinson from the Houston Rockets. The Blazers do have Meyers Leonard in place at center, but he's still developing and the team needs some more help at that position.
The Utah Jazz and Atlanta Hawks could also be in play. The Jazz may lose both Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap to free agency, while the Hawks may have to fill a hole in their frontcourt if Josh Smith goes elsewhere. Splitter also has a link to the general managers of both teams, as both Dennis Lindsey and Danny Ferry were in the Spurs' front office when the big man came into the organization.
It’s unclear just how big of an offer sheet the Spurs are willing to match for Splitter, but they do have plenty of cap space, so they’re in a good position to match. Perhaps San Antonio will wish to use that money elsewhere, however, Splitter was productive for them last year and losing him for nothing wouldn’t be ideal.
Splitter averaged 10.3 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Spurs last season.
