Miss the James Harden-Kevin McHale feud? You’re in luck!

Good morning. We have that and more in Monday’s NBA newsletter.

You may remember that Kevin McHale was fired as Rockets coach just under two years ago amid clashes with James Harden. Harden had come into that season in poor shape, partly due to an injury and — people assume — partly due to joining the Kardashian inner party circle.

Now working as an on-air analyst, McHale offered on NBA TV that Houston traded for Chris Paul because Harden “is not a leader.” In response to a question about his old coach’s comment, Harden declared that McHale is “a clown.” Which is about two breathes of a baby rhino from “bum,” if we’re being honest.

Mike D’Antoni gave some examples of Harden’s leadership to back up his star player, and Harden seemed genuinely hurt by the accusation. It’s worth wondering what leadership in the modern NBA truly is. D’Antoni mentions Harden has gotten the players together in the offseason to train and takes the team out during the season to keep them together. What Paul may instead do will be organize the defense on the court, in the throes of a game.

McHale and D’Antoni may be talking about two different things here. The issue is that McHale really ought not rip players like Harden -- players who will take it very seriously — without expecting to be drawn into a war of words. This is dangerously close to George Karl territory, and you never want to go George Karl.
