It was one of those nights for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Shooting just 36.9 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from three, the Tar Heels could never mount a comeback as Minnesota stayed in control for much of the game. When the smoke cleared, Minnesota walked away with a 72-67 upset win over No. 6 UNC.
UNC Vs. Minnesota: Gophers Upset Tar Heels In Puerto Rico, 72-67
Leading 27-24 at the half, Minnesota kept the game out of reach in the second, staying just out of UNC’s reach. The Tar Heels tied it up with just over 11 minutes remaining, but that was as close as they’d get. Minnesota nailed their free throws down the stretch and UNC couldn't answer, stymied by cold shooting.
Freshman Harrison Barnes was the biggest victim of cold shooting on the night. The highly-touted newcomer was 0-13 from the floor. Barnes finished with just six points, all from the free throw line. Tyler Zeller lead the Tarheels with 16 points on 7-13 shooting. John Henson added 11 rebounds for North Carolina.
Minnesota’s Blake Hoffarber led all scorers on the night with 20 points for the Gophers. Trevor Mbakwe pulled down nine rebounds while adding 12 points. The Gophers cleaned up on the glass, out-rebounding North Carolina, 43-38.
