Midnight Madness marks the opening of the college basketball season across the country. Instead of hard-nosed first practices, it’s a time for celebration for most programs, with elaborate exhibitions and contests serving as hype builders. But sometimes, it’s the simple things -- not high-dollar giveaways or big-name concerts -- that steal the show.
Take George Mason, for instance. How does a giant, choreographed dance-off featuring band director Doc Nix, dressed in his typical ensemble, along with cheerleaders, basketball players and all sorts of other fun outfits sound? That’s what I thought.

St. John’s basketball coach Steve Lavin, who is recovering from prostate cancer surgery on Oct. 6, will not attend the team’s season-opening Red Storm Tip-Off event Friday night.
The Red Storm has promoted Lavin’s appearance earlier in the week. He was expected to address the crowd and join in the festivities. However, the school announced via Twitter on Friday afternoon that he would unable to attend as he continues to recover.

ESPNU will be airing a special from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. featuring highlights and live coverage from nine of the events.
The original justification for holding a “midnight madness” practice was probably the most pure; coaches wanted to send an early message to their players. A rugged workout at 12:01 a.m. on the first day the NCAA allowed teams to practice was the perfect vessel.
