Midnight Madness: Steve Lavin Will Miss St. John’s Festivities

St. John’s basketball coach Steve Lavin, who is recovering from prostate cancer surgery on Oct. 6, will not attend the team’s season-opening Red Storm Tip-Off event Friday night.

The Red Storm has promoted Lavin’s appearance earlier in the week. He was expected to address the crowd and join in the festivities. However, the school announced via Twitter on Friday afternoon that he would unable to attend as he continues to recover.

Lavin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in late 2010. He originally attempted to use more lax treatment as he coached the team. In September, Lavin said that he and his doctors decided to make more aggressive treatments against the cancer, opting ultimately for surgery.

There were no complications during the surgery and Lavin is expected to return to full-time coaching duties after a recovery period that remains TBD.
