PresswireVirginia Tech has hired James Johnson to replace Seth Greenberg as head basketball coach, according to CBSSports.com.
Johnson served as an assistant under Greenberg for five seasons at Virginia Tech before announcing he was accepting the same position at Clemson earlier this month. In a move that surprised many, Virginia Tech announced it was firing Greenberg during a press conference on April 24.

The Hokies had winning records in seven of Greenberg’s nine seasons with the team, but only made the NCAA Tournament once, in 2007. They were notably one of the last teams snubbed from the Big Dance in both 2010 and 2011, but went backwards in the 2011-12 season. Virginia Tech finished their most recent season 16-17, which included a 4-12 record in ACC play.
In a press conference, Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver stated, “We have terminated Seth Greenberg’s tenure as men’s basketball coach... We will engage in the coach search beginning tomorrow. ” He added, in a statement issued by the university, “I want to thank Coach Greenberg for his dedication and effort in leading Virginia Tech in the early years of ACC membership.”
