Virginia Tech has hired former assistant James Johnson to replace Seth Greenberg as head basketball coach. Greenberg was fired after nine seasons on April 24.
Johnson served as an assistant under Greenberg for five seasons at Virginia Tech before announcing he was accepting the same position at Clemson earlier this month. In a move that surprised many, Virginia Tech announced it was firing Greenberg during a press conference on April 24.
In nine seasons at Virginia Tech, Greenberg had produced an overall record of 167-117, including a 66-71 mark in ACC play. His achilles heel in Blacksburg, however, was an inability to get the Hokies into the NCAA Tournament, a feat he accomplished just once. Since 2004-05, Virginia Tech appeared in the NIT five times under Greenberg.
Johnson was one of three Hokie assistants to leave the program following the 2011-12 season. In total, six assistants have left the program in the past four seasons, as has a director of basketball operations. Many believed this high attrition rate played a large factor in Greenberg’s ultimate dismissal.
This will be the first head coaching job for Johnson, who is a native of Virginia.
