Isiah Thomas has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Florida International Golden Panthers, the athletic department announced Friday. The beleaguered former New York Knicks GM and head coach went 8-21 at FIU this season. He spent three years with the Panthers.
Isiah Thomas Fired As Florida International’s Head Coach
Isiah Thomas has been let go as the head coach at Florida International, the athletic department announced Friday. A desire to return to the NBA may have played a large part in the decision.
“We want to thank Isiah Thomas for his three years here at FIU,” the school’s executive director of sports and entertainment Pete Garcia said. “However, we have decided to take the program in a different direction.”
Though Thomas’ record was poor in Miami, there may have been other reasons why he was let go. Sport Illustrated’s Chris Mannix indicated that Thomas’ desire to return to the professional ranks may have played a part.

Given his dubious record in a leadership roles, it’s tough to imagine Thomas making his way back into the NBA ranks anytime soon. FIU has not named an interim head coach.
