Nebraska Reaps Benefits Of Mizzou Win With BCS Boost, Walter Camp Honors

SB Nation’s Corn Nation celebrates Nebraska’s two weeks in a row as Walter Camp player of the week award recipients following the Huskers’ high-profile win over Missouri. This time around, it’s speedy back Roy Helu in the spotlight:

The Huskers’ win was also predictably helpful in the rankings; beating the No. 6 Tigers skipped Nebraska from No. 14 in the BCS standings to No. 7. It was the Huskers’ second consecutive victory over a ranked team. They’ll likely remain in their lofty perches for at least a couple more weeks, with only Iowa State and Kansas standing between them and a 9-1 record.

Missouri Vs. Nebraska: Fear The Huskers’ Offense, For Once

SB Nation’s Rock M Nation launches its regular “Beyond The Box Score” look at Missouri’s Week 9 opponent, Nebraska:

No team in the country is more dependent on the concept of Leverage than Nebraska. They have one of the best offenses on standard downs (1st downs, 2nd-and-6 or less, 3rd-and-4 or less) and the best defense in the country on passing downs. But on the flipside, their offense is extremely vulnerable on passing downs, and their defense can be pushed around a bit on standard downs. The winner of this game will be largely determined by how each team does early in a given set of downs. We will obviously go into much greater detail below, but that is the entire game in a nutshell.

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine how you think an offense would rank when they have a super-young quarterback with explosive rushing ability, the quarterbacking instincts of a redshirt freshman, and an iffy supporting cast. Now open your eyes and look at the data below.

No. 7 Missouri Vs. No. 14 Nebraska: Best Of The Big 12 North

Missouri is one of only seven undefeated teams remaining at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, and coach Gary Pinkel’s club is coming off arguably its biggest win ever -- a 36-27 triumph at home over then-BCS No. 1 Oklahoma. Of course, that win won’t matter much should the Tigers falter down the stretch, but there is no minimizing the impact such a victory, UM’s first over any team bearing a No. 1 ranking, has on the overall college football landscape, at least for the moment.

Pinkel was clearly moved by the effort of all involved last week, “It’s a great win obviously. It’s a great win for our fans too. Tiger Walk today was better than it’s ever been. It was a battle. It went down to the end and they are a tough team,” he continued, “It’s obviously a huge win anytime you can beat the number one team in the nation. I am proud of our team and now the games get bigger. We will enjoy it tonight and get back to work tomorrow. Nebraska is a great team and we have great respect for them.”
