The Bedlam Game, this year, included 40 points in the fourth quarter. But, as has been the case more often than not, it’s the Oklahoma Sooners that are still standing, after outgunning the nation’s top-ranked offense en route to a 47-41 win.

That final quarter was exhilarating, but it was also decisive: the score was 24-24 when it began, and Oklahoma’s offensive execution in the first half of the final period was what gave the Sooners the advantage. The Sooners kicked two field goals in the first 7:22 of the quarter, then matched the Cowboys, pyrotechnic play for pyrotechnic play, as the game went off the rails in the latter half of the period, each team scoring 17 points in the last six minutes of play, at one point trading two touchdowns apiece in just 1:32 of clock.
For the Cowboys, it’s a sour end to a stellar season. Oklahoma denied its in-state rival its first 11-win season, but Oklahoma State still gets to call itself Big 12 South co-champion, and might well get that 11th win in a bowl game.
For the Sooners, though, the win gives them a chance to renew an old rivalry with a BCS bowl berth on the line. Oklahoma is likely to be the top-ranked Big 12 South team in tomorrow’s BCS rankings, which would give the Sooners the chance to play Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship, and cap a storied in-conference rivalry that dates back to the days of the Big 8 before Nebraska’s move to the Big 12 in 2011.
The winner of that game is likely to end up in the Fiesta Bowl.
