The Big Ten may have narrowly avoided a public relations catastrophe with Penn State’s loss to Nebraska in Week 11. But that loss by the Nittany Lions, previously undefeated in the conference, means that neither the Leaders nor the Legends Division has a sure-thing favorite at the moment.
College Football Standings: Big Ten Wide Open After Penn State Loss
Penn State still, er, leads the Leaders Division, with a 5-1 record in conference play, but plays at Ohio State and Wisconsin in the next two weeks. Even if the Nittany Lions get past the Buckeyes, the 4-2 Badgers can win the division and earn a Big Ten Championship Game berth with a win over them in Madison in two weeks.
Meanwhile, in the Legends Division, Michigan State is out in front, but must win out to be guaranteed a place in the Big Ten’s inaugural title game. That shouldn’t be that hard for the Spartans, who must only beat Indiana and Northwestern, but if they lose, Nebraska could play for a Big Ten title in its first year in the conference. That’s because the Huskers would win a tiebreaker with the Spartans after beating them 24-3 in Lincoln in October.
And Michigan’s still alive, too, but it needs Michigan State to lose twice.
