Heisman Trophy 2011 Watch: Kellen Moore’s Stock Falling After First Loss

Kellen Moore and Boise State suffered their first loss of 2011 on Saturday. Is Moore out of the Heisman Trophy race as a result?

Kellen Moore needed everything to break right to have a shot at the 2011 Heisman Trophy. The Boise State signal-caller needed a huge year, statistically, and likely needed his Broncos to compete for a national championship. In the span of one drive against TCU on Saturday, his Heisman hopes evaporated.

Moore threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns in Boise's 36-35 loss to the Horned Frogs, but failed to pilot a comeback on the game's final drive, moving the Broncos into field goal range just so Dan Goodale could push a potential game-winner wide right. Moore didn't look very good on the drive, either, missing on three of his five passes and getting bailed out by one questionable pass interference call. And to make matters worse, TCU sophomore Casey Pachall outplayed Moore on Saturday, throwing for 473 yards and five touchdowns.

All this means that Moore’s Heisman chances are somewhere south of slim and north of none at this point: he’s thrown for 2,549 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2011, but was likely only headed to New York for the Heisman ceremony if he led an undefeated Boise State team into national championship contending. The Broncos’ first loss of the season — just the third of Moore’s illustrious career — likely dashed that dream.
