No. 8 Virginia Tech outlasted a conference foe, while No. 20 Southern Miss saw its BCS dreams dashed and Marshall moved within a win of bowl eligibility.

    Virginia Tech Vs. North Carolina Final Score: Hokies Survive Late Charge, 24-21

    After a close first half that saw the Virginia Tech Hokies take a 10-7 lead into the break, it looked like North Carolina was about ready to be run off the field in the third quarter. Virginia Tech scored two touchdowns coming out of the half while keeping the Tar Heels off the board in the third, taking a 24-7 lead into the fourth quarter. But a win wouldn’t come easy for the No. 8 Hokies.

    The Virginia Tech offense went silent in the final 15 minutes and North Carolina nearly hauled the Hokies down from behind. Bryn Renner found Erik Highsmith for seven yards and the touchdown to cut the Hokies lead to 10. With just over two minutes to go in the ballgame, Ryan Houston capped a four-play, 91-yard drive with a one-yard plunge into the end zone, bringing North Carolina to within three.

    Southern Miss Vs. UAB Final Score: Blazers Pull The Upset, 34-31

    Coming into Thursday night’s matchup with No. 20, the UAB Blazers had only been able to muster two wins on the year. It didn’t matter. UAB was able to stay one step ahead of the previously 9-1 Golden Eagles, pulling off the upset in Birmingham, 34-31.

    UAB took a three-point lead into the break after scoring the final 10 points of the second quarter. After the two teams combined for 45 points in the first half, the action settled, with only a Southern Miss field goal to show for the third quarter. But in the final 15 minutes, fireworks erupted, at least for the Blazers.

    Southern Miss Vs. UAB Score: No. 20 Golden Eagles Trail, 24-21

    Unlike the Thursday night ACC game, it’s been a high scoring Conference USA affair as the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles trail the UAB Blazers at the half, 24-21. Both teams came out firing, combining for 28 first quarter points. And the action has hardly slowed down.

    Southern Mississippi scored the first two touchdowns of the game, jumping out to a 14-0 lead on two long completions by quarterback Austin Davis. The Southern Miss quarterback found Ryan Balentine for 34 yards and the score first, then followed it up with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Bolden.

    Virginia Tech Vs. North Carolina Score: Hokies Lead, But Just Barely

    It’s been a slow start to the Thursday night ACC matchup between No. 8 Virginia Tech and North Carolina, with the Hokies leading at the half, 10-7. North Carolina is hanging around, and struck first to take a 7-0 lead into the second frame. But the Hokies have answered and are just barely ahead at the break.

    Giovani Bernard broke the scoreless tie in the first quarter, plunging in from four yards out to give the Tar Heels a 7-0 lead. The scoring drive spanned just 20 yards in three plays, coming early in the first quarter.
