Coming into Thursday night’s matchup with No. 20, the UAB Blazers had only been able to muster two wins on the year. It didn’t matter. UAB was able to stay one step ahead of the previously 9-1 Golden Eagles, pulling off the upset in Birmingham, 34-31.

UAB took a three-point lead into the break after scoring the final 10 points of the second quarter. After the two teams combined for 45 points in the first half, the action settled, with only a Southern Miss field goal to show for the third quarter. But in the final 15 minutes, fireworks erupted, at least for the Blazers.
The Blazers struck first, finding the end zone on a three-yard run by Greg Franklin early in the fourth quarter. Three minutes later, Southern Miss answered, tying the game back up on a one-yard run from Austin Davis. And again, all went quiet for an extended period of time.
With three minutes left in the game, UAB kicker Ty Long connected on a 38-yard field goal, capping a 12-play, 49-yard drive and giving the Blazers the lead. It was a lead UAB would never surrender as Southern Miss couldn’t find an answer to fend off the upset.
