After a close first half that saw the Virginia Tech Hokies take a 10-7 lead into the break, it looked like North Carolina was about ready to be run off the field in the third quarter. Virginia Tech scored two touchdowns coming out of the half while keeping the Tar Heels off the board in the third, taking a 24-7 lead into the fourth quarter. But a win wouldn’t come easy for the No. 8 Hokies.
Virginia Tech Vs. North Carolina Final Score: Hokies Survive Late Charge, 24-21
The Virginia Tech offense went silent in the final 15 minutes and North Carolina nearly hauled the Hokies down from behind. Bryn Renner found Erik Highsmith for seven yards and the touchdown to cut the Hokies lead to 10. With just over two minutes to go in the ballgame, Ryan Houston capped a four-play, 91-yard drive with a one-yard plunge into the end zone, bringing North Carolina to within three.
But it was as close as the Tar Heels would get as Virginia Tech hung on for a three-point win, 24-21.
