The Week 13 USA Today poll and the Week 13 AP Poll each have an ACC team in the top six (it’s Virginia Tech), but there’s only a minute chance that an ACC team will play in the BCS Championship Game.
College Football Standings: Could Virginia Crash The ACC Championship Game?
Because of this, it is far more fun to discuss the most insane possibility still alive: Virginia could win the ACC.
The Cavaliers upset Florida State on the road in Week 12 to set up a de facto ACC Championship Game play-in game this week with Virginia Tech. The winner of that game wins the ACC’s Coastal Division: Virginia Tech would be 7-1 in conference with a win, while Virginia would tie Tech at 6-2 and win the head-to-head tiebreaker.
For Virginia to win the ACC, though, the Wahoos would need wins against Virginia Tech and the Atlantic Division winner in the ACC Championship Game. Given that the Atlantic Division winner is Clemson, which had nothing to play for in Week 12 and promptly got crushed by North Carolina State, 37-13, this is very much within the realm of possibility for Virginia.
