Texas Vs. Texas A&M 2011 Highlights: A Last-Second Field Goal And A Questionable Personal Foul

This was going to be just a compilation of punts, because at one point that’s all Thursday night’s matchup between Texas and Texas A&M was good for. In the first half, the Aggies and Longhorns combined for 10 punts, seven of which came from Texas. It was as if the Longhorns carefully crafted a strategy around the kicking game.

Surprisingly, it worked for a moment. After six punt attempts that resulted in nothing, Texas pounced on a fumble after the seventh attempt, scoring a touchdown on the next play by way of a wide receiver pass. Punt to win, you guys.

Texas rallied, coming alive in the third quarter to take the lead. A&M came right back in the fourth quarter, driving down the field to take a one-point lead with under two minutes to go. But the drama was just getting started.

On Texas’ final drive, Twitter erupted as irate fans voiced their displeasure with a late personal foul call that gave the Longhorns a free 15 yards on their final drive. The play can be found below.

Yes, it doesn't knock the receiver out cold, but the defender did lead with his helmet, and did strike the receiver in the head. Questionable? Sure, and it will be debated until fans forget about it.

The call gave the Longhorns a shot in the arm and they took advantage, driving into field goal range thanks to a 25-yard Case McCoy scramble. With three seconds to go, the Longhorns lined up for the game-winning field goal, trailing A&M by one, 25-24.

And that’s it. The Aggies head off to the SEC, the Longhorns stay put in the Big 12 and the rivalry likely dies for at least a few years. There was one final shot fired at A&M, and it came from the most ironic of places.

And so it ends. Texas gets a 27-25 win and Texas A&M rides off into the sunset.
