Auburn Vs. Alabama 2011 Final Score: No Iron Bowl Comeback This Time

Bama concludes its year with zero regulation losses and a solitary setback, which came against the nation’s top team. It’ll take either a human revolt or against the concept of a rematch or an astounding performance by OSU to thwart an all-SEC national championship game. It doesn’t appear that even a LSU loss in the SEC Championship can stop this train.

Either way, it’s now 7-0, Bama, after some offensive sputters. A nine-play, 81-yard scoring drive will do the trick.

PHOTO: The Iron Bowl Brings Out The Best In Us All

The Iron Bowl should in theory be the most bitter in years. Auburn beat Alabama with the biggest comeback in series history last year. A deranged Bama fan responded by poisoning Auburn landmark Toomer’s Oaks with insecticide. None of this helped what was already one of college football’s most acrimonious rivalries, so it is a relief to see everyone’s sense of humor is still alive and intact for pregame today.

Either he is the most comfortable and self-confident Alabama fan in the world, or he is the most diabolical Auburn plant ever. Knowing this rivalry, he is more likely the latter, and not to be trusted. (Via EDSBS commenter Board Certified Scrotologist.)

Alabama Vs. Auburn: Crimson Tide Needs Another New Weapon Or Two

For the last two years, the winner of the national title has held off a tough upset bid on the road in the Iron Bowl before going on to take home the crystal football. Alabama looks to make it three straight years as they take on Auburn this afternoon at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The Tide have lucked into a great situation: since they lost to LSU, they don’t have to beat Georgia next week in the SEC Championship to make the national title game -- all they have to do is beat Auburn. But the Tigers gave them all they could handle two years ago, and with the twists and turns this rivalry has taken in recent years, an Auburn upset would fit the script nicely. Still, Alabama is by far the superior team.

Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide may not get a chance to play for the SEC crown, but find themselves in perfect position to play for a national title, as they bring a 10-1 record into this contest. Outside of a three-point overtime loss to top-ranked LSU (9-6) a couple of weeks ago, Alabama has certainly looked the part of the one of the top teams in the land. The Tide were able to distance themselves from that loss to LSU with back-to-back wins over Mississippi State (24-7) and FCS powerhouse Georgia Southern (45-21).

Gene Chizik’s Tigers are the defending national champs, but without the Heisman winner from a year ago running the show, Auburn has taken a could steps back, coming into this game with a 7-4 overall record. The team was also host to an FCS school last weekend, besting Samford, 35-16.
