Dabo Swinney was asked about the assertion after practice Thursday (at the 1:50 mark below). At first, he hoped Spurrier didn’t actually say it, but then so many wheels started falling off, concluding with, “Carolina’s in Chapel Hill and USC’s in California and the university in this state -- always has been, always will be -- Clemson.”
Swinney has been saving up a lot of this stuff for a long time. How does he know how many wins Spurrier had in 2009? Do Carolina fans even know that?
Clemson holds the all-time series record, but it ain’t about who won during the time period Wikipedia refers to as “Agitation from the Farmers,” Mr. Swinney. It’s about who holds the Hardee’s Trophy right now. The Hardee’s Trophy. It doesn’t matter whether one side has exacted “domination” during one or another portion of a series. Once the victory totem is termed the Hardee’s Trophy, you’re undeniably in a rivalry.
Actually, once players fight each other out of bowl bids and farmers get agitated and fans hold competing annual blood drives you’ve got a rivalry, but Hardee’s too.
