Jake Heaps Also Transferring To Kansas, Giving Charlie Weis QB Talent

Kansas has turned its quarterback depth chart into a potential position of strength, two months before signing day.

All of a sudden, the Kansas Jayhawks have a blue-chip, if unproven, quarterback depth chart. As had been pondered, both Notre Dame Fighting Irish transfer Dayne Crist and BYU Cougars transfer Jake Heaps announced their decisions to join Charlie Weis in Lawrence, hopefully meaning multiple years of gifted passers for the Jayhawks.

There won’t be any quarterback controversies, either, since Crist is eligible to play his senior season in 2012 and Heaps must sit out for a year. While Crist is the bigger name from the bigger program, Heaps looks to be in the more promising situation, as he’ll have a year of practice in Weis’ system (and, if all goes well, an improved offensive line) before taking over.

For Kansas fans, this is perhaps the best football day they’ve had in many months:

The commitments from both Crist and Heaps provide potentially program turning stability to the Kansas Jayhawks on the offensive side of the ball. Provided Weis and his staff (Tim Grunhard) can develop the big guys up front and the skilled weapons to support these two, the Jayhawks could turn around an abysmal offense in a hurry. Now all eyes will turn to the defensive side of the ball where Weis has yet to name a defensive coordinator. If his recent additions to the Kansas program are any indication, it would seem that Kansas football is in good hands early on.
