Florida State announced a one-year contract extension for head coach Jimbo Fisher on Thursday in what was more of a procedural move than anything else. Fisher’s financial terms will remain the same, with an extra year tacked onto the end of the current contract. The extension, of sorts, will keep Fisher under contract through the 2016 season.

For his part, Fisher expressed gratitude in a statement that went along with the announcement of the contract extension.

“I’m very grateful and very respectful,” said Fisher. “Florida State is a job you want to stay at forever. The faith the university has in us, the program and the direction in which we are going, we feel very fortunate. We are committed to this and they are committed to this. We are very blessed and thankful to President [Eric] Barron, our athletic director Randy Spetman and our Board of Trustees for the extension. We’re very excited about the future and where our program is going.”

The extension announcement comes on the same day Fisher’s Seminoles are playing Notre Dame in the Champs Sports Bowl. Florida State finished the 2011 regular season at 8-4, including a 5-3 mark in the ACC.
