Russell Wilson To Wisconsin: University Confirms With Bret Bielema Statement

Like a surprise handoff that won't be a surprise to anyone in Madison, to Russell Wilson's alleged July 1 football-or-baseball-or-football decision arrived early, and his intentions to transfer to the University of Wisconsin have just been confirmed in a statement by the school. From the UWBadgers.com release:

“Russell will come in and compete for the starting quarterback position,” Bielema said. “This is an unusual situation, especially for a program that prides itself on developing players throughout their careers, as we do here at Wisconsin. However, this is a special situation and Russell is the type of player and person that fits very well with our team.”

Wilson will succeed Scott Tolzien at the helm of an offense ranked 21st nationally in total yardage in 2010, and fifth in scoring, and a good bet for the Badgers to reach the first-ever Big Ten title game this winter just got better. SB Nation's Wisconsin blog is stoked for the opportunity to lead the Leaders division (sorry):

Needless to say, this is a huge get for Wisconsin. Boasting a talented running game and an improved defense, the only glaring hole in Wisconsin’s quest to return to the Rose Bowl was the lack of a reliable quarterback. Not only is Wilson reliable, but he is arguably one of the most talented quarterbacks to ever potentially take a snap for the Badgers. And our N.C. State community, to their everlasting credit, continues to wish the kid well: “Good luck in Wisconsin, Russell. This is going to be really weird. Never let it be said that you don’t like a challenge.”

The newly be-Wilsoned Badgers will open the 2011 season on Thursday night, September 1, at home against UNLV.
