We’ve already noted the usual futility of Vanderbilt recruiting, and how unlikely that made it that the Commodores would actually pull off as big a coup as it seemed last week like they might pull off. Well, the coup has been partly accomplished, with one of the four-star players mentioned committing Friday with a couple of other recruits.
‘Vanderbilt Football Recruiting, Four Stars.’ ‘What Are, Things That Actually Go Together?’
Caleb Azubike, a defensive end from Nashville, donned a Vanderbilt hat. So did Nashville wide receiver Corey Batey. Then Brian Kimbrow, the most heavily recruited of the three, picked up a Tennessee hat. But try as he might, Kimbrow couldn’t get the orange lid on his head.
“Nah, it didn’t fit,” Kimbrow said during a live broadcast by Nashville’s WGFX-FM. Then Kimbrow grabbed another hat. “It’s Vandy,” he said.
And that’s what you call a bad set-up. Really -- the other two players commit to Vanderbilt, and then you’re going to announce that you’re going to Tennessee, setting yourself up as a giant buzzkill?
Stage management aside, this is a huge day for Vanderbilt, if for no other reason than fan and team morale. (Though we’ll know the true significance on National Signing Day.) James Franklin has made these players commit to Vandy despite the academic standards. Then again, if Kimbrow’s Twitter feed is any indication, the academic standards might still pose a problem ...
