Lafayette, Indiana’s WLFI is reporting that the body of Sean Matti, a Purdue running back entering his fifth year with the team, was recovered Tuesday morning in Monticello’s Lake Freeman, where he disappeared while swimming at a friend’s house party Sunday night. The station also reports that alcohol may have been a contributing factor to Matti’s death, with other partygoers telling police they had been drinking, but Matti's official cause of death has not yet been released.
Sean Matti Dead At 22: Purdue RB’s Body Recovered In Lake
Matti is being remembered this morning at SB Nation’s Hammer and Rails, who’ve been following the story through the social media accounts of Matti’s Boilermaker teammates:
I never had a chance to know Matti. he was one of the silent workers on the team that had hustled for four years as a scout team running back, but never played a down in an actual game. He had seen extensive action in several spring games, but never during the regular season.
I can post the usual fodder of this being a senseless tragedy and everything, but the real emotion has been seen all over Twitter this morning.
Sean Matti was 22. Our sincere condolences to his family and to the entire Purdue football community.
