Russell Shepard Ineligible, Will Miss LSU Opener Against Oregon

The fun never ends in Baton Rouge. LSU Tigers wide receiver Russell Shepard has been suspended by the NCAA for the season-opener against Oregon and "a number of games more," the school announced Thursday.

The reason he’s been suspended? Shepard spoke with a teammate about that player’s meeting with NCAA officials prior to Shepard’s own meeting.

LSU said they plan to apply to have Shepard reinstated and his eligibility restored, but there is no current timetable for a ruling on that application.

He can and will continue to practice with the team in the meantime.

Shepard was LSU's third-leading receiver and fourth-leading rusher last season, however he's fallen short of meeting expectations as a top recruit coming into the school. With the events involving Jordan Jefferson, Josh Johns, Chris Davenport, and Jarvis Landry continuing to spiral, the Tigers were counting on players like Shepard to step up against last year's National Runner-Up.
