LSU Vs. West Virginia: Morgantown Descending Into More Madness Than Usual

When students are in town, few days in Morgantown, West Virginia qualify as business as usual. But as the town prepares for WVU’s matchup against LSU this weekend - it’s Morgantown’s biggest game in years - things are getting especially strange.

First, ESPN College GameDay came to campus on Friday, with many Mountaineers fans camping out in rainy weather to be a part of the show. Erin Andrews was there, decked out in a coonskin hat. A photo and video are after the jump.

Via the Smoking Musket, here’s video of her wearing it. (“It smells, too,” she says at the end.)

Then there are the rumors that LSU fans ran through WVU classrooms on Friday to talk trash. Good luck with that, Tigers fans, although my guess is that a lot of the fiercest Mountaineers fans weren’t in class on Friday.

Then there’s the fact that the city of Morgantown has required town residents to clean their porches. Most porches in student neighborhoods (such as Sunnyside, up the road from the Mountainlair, where College GameDay was filmed) have couches, and WVU students are infamous for burning couches in celebration.

“I just can’t see it putting a stop to people’s desire to burn,” [WVU junior Mark] Kookan said. “It might hide things to burn, but I feel that if I see someone burning something, I want to be a part of that.”

“Desire to burn” is a fantastic phrase. WVU students’ rowdiness on weeks like these truly is something to behold, but who knew there was poetry in it?
