Welcome back to another episode of the Case Keenum show. On Thursday night, in a game that was supposed to play second fiddle to the matchup between USF and Pitt, Keenum and the Houston Cougars found themselves in the midst of a complete shootout against the UTEP Miners, resulting in stats that resembled a video game. Houston escaped with a 49-42 win,
Houston Vs. UTEP: Case Keenum Piles Up Yards In 49-42 Win
Keenum was his usual self, compiling ridiculous yardage while winging the ball all over the place in Houston’s high-powered offense. But this time around, UTEP was game, and fired back with big plays of its own to make things interesting throughout. By the time it was over, the Miners and Cougars had combined for 91 points and 1,251 yards of total offense, 713 of which came from Houston.
Keenum finished the night with 471 yards and two touchdowns -- an 84-yarder to Charles Sims and a 23-yard score to E.J. Smith. Patrick Edwards caught eight passes for 144 yards, but failed to find the end zone. And even with Keenum throwing the ball all over the place, the Houston rushing attack was able to get in on the fun, with Charles Sims rushing for 111 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and Michael Hayes picking up 100 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
Through five games, Keenum has thrown for 1,534 yards and 12 touchdowns to just two interceptions while completing 71 percent of his passes. While the level of competition has been far from superior -- not sure UTEP actually fielded a defense on Thursday -- his numbers are still jaw-dropping, as they have been throughout his career.
Thursday night was another explosive passing display, though UTEP was more than game to engage in a shootout. But thanks to Keenum and a running game that found little resistance from its opponent, the Cougars survived, staying perfect on the season.
