West Virginia enters the 11th rendition of the "Coal Bowl" with new head coach, and former Oklahoma State offensive coordinator, Dana Holgorsen roaming the sideline. Holgorsen's brand of the Air Raid offense has led the nation in yards per game in each of the past two seasons at two different schools, Houston and OSU. The Mountaineers were expected to feature a potent offense even prior to Holgorsen's arrival, with the efficient Geno Smith back at quarterback. Smith completed nearly 65 percent of passes last year, throwing 24 touchdowns to just seven interceptions.
Marshall Vs. West Virginia: Game Time, TV Schedule, Odds And More
The Marshall Thundering Herd, behind true freshman quarterback Rakeem Cato, is aiming for its first win ever over the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Marshall, meanwhile, will be starting true freshman Rakeem Cato under center. The good news is that Cato legitimately earned the starting nod by beating out sophomore A.J. Graham in the preseason. Still, coming off a 5-7 season, it would be too much to expect the Herd to take a significant leap forward this season, much less beat West Virginia. The Thundering Herd are 0-10 all-time against the Mountaineers.
