LSU’s Mo Isom Wouldn’t Be First Woman To Play College Football

Yes, LSU Tigers women's soccer goalie Mo Isom really is trying out for a spot at football spring practice. She told our own LSU blog And The Valley Shook in November that she'd been training for 10 months at that point and had connected on a 51-yard field goal during fall walk-on tryouts. She also practiced kicking off when not recording super fun competitive videos with LSU players like Tyrann Mathieu and fellow kickperson Brad Wing.

Were she to make the roster behind starter Drew Alleman, she'd become the first Division I female football player since Katie Hnida converted two extra points for the New Mexico Lobos in 2003. Hnida was the first woman to ever play for a Division I-A football team. (She played semi-pro ball through 2010.)

The first woman to ever score in a college football game was Liz Heaston, who made two extra points for the NAIA’s Williamette in 1997. She was followed by former high school homecoming queen Ashley Martin of Jacksonville State in 2001, who kicked three single-pointers and became Division I’s first female player.

Only one woman has scored a field goal in a college game: West Alabama’s Tonya Butler in 2003. She hit 13 of her 19 career attempts, including a long of 39. That’s nothing! Mo’s scored from 90 yards out!

The best part about this is that it's happening at LSU. That means you absolutely shouldn't rule out anything, including Isom overtaking Zach Mettenberger for first down duties. Les Miles will run fake field goals from the other side of the field via his lady kicker. Don't even doubt it.
