Michigan Wolverines backup safety Josh Furman has been suspended for two months following his arrest for suspicion of assault, the Associated Press reports.

“Josh was suspended indefinitely from team activities as soon as we became aware of the report,” Wolverines coach Brady Hoke said Monday. “These are serious allegations. We will allow the judicial process to run its course before making a final determination on his status with the program.”

Furman was charged with domestic violence, assault and breaking and entering/illegal entry following an incident on February 11. Furman’s attorney, Gerry Mason, told the Detroit Free Press that the case is “overblown”, saying that Furman was with two women at an on-campus apartment when another man began texting Furman in an attempt to “pick a fight”.

“Mr. Furman got up and they thought he was going to try to find the man so the two females jumped on him,” Mason said. “The only person injured was Mr. Furman, who had a dreadlock pulled out of his head.”

As a redshirt freshman in 2011, Furman appeared in 12 games, totaling 10 tackles and blocking a punt against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Furman also had one punt return for six yards in the 45-17 win over the Cornhuskers.
