It's going to be a big season for Texas A&M football, and it looks like a redshirt freshman will be the Aggies' guy under center. The school announced that Johnny Manziel has won the team's starting quarterback job over sophomores Jameill Showers and Matt Joeckel.

As a back-up to Ryan Tannehill last season, Showers was the only quarterback of the trio who has game experience, but Manziel's heralded high school career as a Parade All-American paired with recent performances in practice and scrimmages propelled him to the top of first-year head coach Kevin Sumlin's depth chart.

Despite the bright future for Manziel, it should be noted that the 19-year-old was arrested and jailed in College Station, Texas back in June after being involved in a fight and possessing multiple fake IDs to authorities.

This trio of misdemeanors certainly drew the ire of the Aggies coaching staff and the eyebrows of fans, but Manziel is still in position to become the face of the school’s football program for three, maybe even four seasons, depending on his success level.

Texas A&M’s first season as a member of the SEC kicks off on August 30 against Louisiana Tech.
