Texas Football: David Ash Officially Named Starting QB

Mack Brown officially named David Ash the starting quarterback of the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday afternoon.

Ash is listed at the top of Brown's depth chart, which can be viewed in its entirety here. Ash beat out both Case McCoy and Connor Brewer, who are second- and third-string, respectively.

Ash, who is entering his sophomore year at Texas, threw for 1,079 yards in 2011 as a freshman. Ash threw four touchdowns for the Longhorns last year, while throwing eight interceptions. Though he struggled as a freshman, Ash is a year younger than McCoy, and is both bigger and stronger than McCoy.

If Ash does struggle in Texas’s first few games, McCoy will almost certainly get a chance to prove that he is capable of leading the Longhorns. Until then, it’s Ash’s team.

Texas opens up the 2012 season on Sept. 1 at home against Wyoming.
