Texas Football: David Ash, Case McCoy Still Competing

Remember how we'd all decided months ago that David Ash is pretty much going to be Texas' starter this year? We did. And that's what most of us have presumed all offseason, even though Mack Brown has yet to officially name Ash the starter over Case McCoy. It might be a little while yet, too:

Mack Brown has so far refused to name Ash the starter for the Sept. 1 season opener against Wyoming and insists there’s a spirited competition for the position.

So what’s holding Ash back?

“You’re asking the wrong guy,” Ash said Sunday. He and McCoy sat about 20 feet apart and each was surrounded by reporters asking about the competition, their summer workouts and how they’ve tried to improve their play.

For his part, McCoy has packed on 15 pounds and used his Holiday Bowl bench-sitting as motivation to reclaim his spot, so perhaps the competition really wasn’t quite as over as we’d thought.

Texas fans prefer Ash over the platoon system the Horns used last year. He has a dual-threat component to him that could get interesting, considering what the Boise State system, which produced offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin, did with Broncos quarterback Grant Hedrick at times last year.
