Boise State Officially Joins Big West In Non-Football Sports

Boise State has officially accepted an invitation to join the Big West Conference for non-football sports, the team announced on Friday. The Broncos will be competing in the Big West in Olympic sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer and softball, women’s softball, and a number of other non-football sports. The move will be official on July 1, 2013.

The move to the Big West is part of the move of the football team to the Big East in 2013.

“Boise State’s membership in the Big West Conference complements our Big East Conference football presence and reflects our emerging coast-to-coast profile,” Boise State President Bob Kustra stated. “We are truly excited by the prospects of competition and collaboration with all these new partners both athletically and academically. The Big West will be an outstanding home for the majority of our intercollegiate sports and will provide great opportunities for our student-athletes.”

Boise State will have to pay a $2.5 million exit fee to join the Big West as part of the move out of the Mountain West conference, and will be paid annually over the next five years. The university will also have to pay a an travel fee of $750,000, for each conference team visiting for regular season competition.

Boise State will be joined by San Diego State in the Big West, whose football team is also joining the Big East in 2013.
